Ariel is a fictional character and the main character in Walt Disney Pictures' 28th animated film, The Little Mermaid (1989). She later appeared in the film's prequel television series (1992–1994), the direct-to-video sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000), and the direct-to-video prequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (2008). Ariel is voiced by Jodi Benson in all official animated appearances and merchandise. She is the fourth in the Disney Princess lineup, the first non-human princess, and the only princess to become the mother of her own child.
